In the spring of 1991, I wrote a piece about the Ukrainian Heritage Cultural Village, west of Edmonton, not too far from where the buffalo roam throughout Elk Island Park. I met some of the people who were theme characters: women dressed in long dresses and men in overalls and plaid shirts, fashion statements of the primitive 1900s.They graciously answered two sets of questions — one, as employees of the Village and what they did, and another one in character. I used a pocket tape recorder for the interview. Even before my first question to them as interrupters, a gentleman picked up my recorder and throughly examined it.
